Settled by Sunday: the first 48 hours
A move ends twice: once when the truck leaves, and once when the house works. Most families are left alone for the second half. This guide is that half, hour by hour, written for a family landing on a Friday or Saturday with school on Monday.
The principle: function before order
The instinct after a move is to make rooms LOOK done, and it's a trap. A house is settled when it FUNCTIONS: everyone sleeps in a real bed, breakfast happens without archaeology, and Monday's school run leaves from a known launchpad. Boxes of books can wait a fortnight; the kettle cannot wait a morning.
Move day evening: the four wins
- Every bed assembled and made. This is why beds come off the truck into their rooms first, and why we bolt frames as part of the move. Nobody sleeps on a mattress on the floor of their own new house.
- The kettle kit opened. Kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, milk, one pan, cutlery for everyone. If you packed this as its own clearly-marked box (do), tonight it earns its keep.
- Bathrooms operational. Towels out, soap out, shower curtain up, toilet paper found without a search party.
- One clear surface per person. A place to put your phone, your keys, tomorrow's clothes. Small, and enormous.
Saturday: the working core
- Kitchen to fully live. Fridge stocked (the big shop is a Saturday-morning job), everyday plates and pans shelved, bin established. Ignore the platters and the good china entirely.
- Kids' rooms to "theirs". Clothes into drawers, the familiar doona visible, the ten most-loved things unpacked by the kids themselves. A room becomes theirs the moment their stuff is arranged by their own hands.
- The paperwork drawer. One drawer, everything important from the move: keys, manuals, meter photos, the folder you'll otherwise hunt for in March.
- Break down as you go. Flatten every emptied box the hour it empties; the pile is the motivation.
Sunday: launchpad day
- The school run, rehearsed. Uniforms found and hung, bags packed, lunchbox logistics tested, and the drive (or walk) to school timed once without stakes.
- Workspaces stood up. Around here nearly half of working adults work from home some of the week, so the desk, the chair and the Wi-Fi deserve Sunday attention; Monday will ask for them.
- The garage triage. Not an unpack, a sort: what stays staged down there for later, what must come up this week. Ten minutes with a marker, and future-you says thanks.
- One deliberate nice thing. Pictures on one wall, the reading lamp in its corner, dinner cooked in your own kitchen. The thing that makes everyone exhale.
Or: it arrives done
Everything above is also a service. On a full arrival move the crew does the heavy half of this list before leaving: beds built, kitchen unpacked to working order, boxes on their right levels, empties gone. You get the weekend back for the parts only your family can do, which are the good parts.
